Tiger Woods was seriously injured and hospitalized Tuesday morning after being involved in a car crash near Ranchos Palos Verdes, California. It had to be pulled out of his sport utility vehicle because it suffered major damage from a single-vehicle rollover traffic accident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Woods, 45, completed his surgery on Tuesday evening. The 15-time winner has undergone “extensive surgery on his right leg and ankle” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and is “awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room,” according to a press release from his team.

Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg first said his client suffered multiple leg injuries. Reports from Los Angeles Times and ESPN reported that Woods had injured both legs. It is not known if additional surgeries are in her future.
His injuries were not found to be fatal at the crash site. Woods was conscious, calm and lucid when paramedics arrived at the scene. Paramedics considered him to be in serious but stable condition, with a representative from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department claiming that Woods was “lucky to be alive,” attributing his vehicle (a 2021 Genesis SUV) and the decision to wear a seat belt.
The only occupant of the SUV, Woods, was pulled by paramedics through the vehicle’s windshield, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. There was no proof of driving ability.
Woods was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center by ambulance to be treated for his injuries. LAFD chief Daryl Osby explained that transporting Woods to a trauma center rather than a local hospital indicated his injuries were serious but his condition was not critical.
Woods is said to have “traveled at a high speed” when he “lost control of the vehicle before crossing the center splitter” with his SUV being driven several times, police sources told the Times. The LASD did not confirm this description of the accident, but noted that the area has a high rate of car accidents because the vehicles are moving downhill on a steep curve. The accident, which occurred shortly after 7 a.m., is under investigation by LASD.
Helicopter footage from the KCBS-TV crash scene showed an SUV lying on its side in a ditch at the bottom of a hill with heavy damage to its front end. Many parts of the vehicle were in the vicinity. The airbags deployed but the cabin inside the SUV was not affected, according to LASD.
