WESTON – Drew Cayton scored two touchdowns to help Lewis County claim a 22-8 victory over Elkins on Friday night in Big 10 conference action at Minutemen Stadium.
Cayton opened the scoring for the Minutemen (1-2, 1-1 Big 10) when he rushed for a 10-yard touchdown with three minutes left in the first quarter. The two-point conversion attempt on a run failed as the hosts held a 6-0 advantage.
Lewis County extended the lead to 14-0 with 7:32 left in the second quarter when Cayton scored again, this time on a 4-yard scamper, and Brayden Carder ran in the two-run conversion.
Neither team was able to find the end zone for the remainder of the first half and the Tigers (0-3, 0-3) looked ready to strike first in the third chant. But a fumble at the Minutemen’s 1-yard line returned the ball to the hosts and held the score 14-0 with 42 seconds left in the quarter.
Lewis County virtually sealed the deal after the turnover as it embarked on a 99-yard run that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown executed by Carder with 5:06 remaining in time regulatory. Carder had 45 rushing yards on that single drive and added the two-point conversion to make it 22-0.
Elkins didn’t go quietly, however, and eventually rose to the board in the practice that followed when Javier Rosario completed a 54-yard practice with a 2-yard touchdown with 2:57 left. Practice was aided by a 33-yard run from Nicholas Bowers and Rosario made the two-point conversion to reduce the deficit to 22-8.
A Tigers’ back kick attempt was picked up by the Minutemen, who managed to land a pair of first downs and kill the clock.
Rosario finished the contest with 56 rushing yards on 10 attempts. Chase Workman picked up a fumble for Elkins’ defense.
Lewis County will travel to Roane County for a non-conference competition next Friday.
The Tigers have a week off next Friday and will be back in action on September 24 when they travel to Philippi to face rival Philip Barbour.
