The Times News Media Group newspaper carriers won the top two places in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association Foundation’s annual Carrier of the Year competition.
Thirteen-year-old Julius DeMicco was named the overall winner, while Mathew Cadugan took second place.
The judges said they were impressed with “the user-friendliness and reliability of DeMicco with a 100% delivery rate.
Top performing operators nominations are submitted by news outlets across Pennsylvania. Nominees are judged on their itinerary performance and customer service, as well as personal and community service.
A letter of recommendation from a client stated that Julius “is without a doubt the most reliable of all the carriers that have served me. In addition, he has the most seductive smile and the nicest disposition of almost, if not all, the young people with whom I have been in contact.
Others mentioned that their paper comes, “like clockwork, no matter the season or the weather.”
Among his letters of praise was one from the mayor of Palmerton. At school, Julius has always won top honors on the Principal’s List and at home he enjoys playing video games, programming on the computer, and spending time with his dogs, Luna and Brody.
Julius follows in his family’s footsteps. Her father, Paul, was also a porter for the Times News.
An open carrier position was available a year and a half ago, and DeMicco jumped at the chance. He loves being a porter, he says, because he meets new people and gets to know the neighborhood.
“The Times News is very pleased and honored that one of our carriers is named the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association Carrier of the Year,” said Christine Campbell, Broadcasting Director for Times News and Lehigh Valley Press. “It is a great achievement to be recognized as the number one among all newspaper hauliers across Pennsylvania. After meeting Julius, I can understand why he was chosen. He is a bright and graceful young man who clearly deserves this honor.
Cash prizes and certificates suitable for coaching are awarded to the first carrier, DeMicco, receiving $ 350. Second place winner Cadugan received $ 250.
Cadugan has become a transporter to earn extra cash, adding that “he enjoys exercise and daily interactions with his customers.”
Autism has limited Cadugan’s work options and he is “happy the Times News has given him the opportunity to prove himself.”
“Mathew always delivers his papers on time and usually starts as soon as his bundles are delivered,” read one of his letters of appointment.
Cadugan also has a 100 percent delivery rate.
“It was a double credit for Times News and for our carriers,” said Campbell.
