Tips for avoiding West Nile Virus

[ad_1]

Although no human cases of West Nile have been reported to NDDoH until this year, there is a risk of contracting this virus whenever mosquitoes are active.

Tips to avoid mosquito bites:

  • Use an insect repellent approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) containing ingredients such as DEET, picaridine, IR3535, lemon eucalyptus oil, PMD and permethrin (clothing only).
  • Wear protective clothing on the outside such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks.
  • Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes likely to carry West Nile are most likely to sting.
  • Eliminate stagnant water in containers around homes where mosquitoes can lay their eggs (gutters, buckets, flowerpots, old tires, wading pools and birdbaths).

  • Install or repair mosquito nets on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

  • Keep a well-maintained yard and landscape around your house.
