URBANA – A Tolono has been sentenced to 52 months in prison for embezzling more than $ 600,000 from her former employer and non-payment of federal income tax.
Joan Chenoweth was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Court Judge Colin Bruce.
Bruce further ordered Chenoweth to serve three years of supervised release after his prison term and to pay restitution of $ 599,152.72 to his former employer, Illini Contractor Supply, and an additional $ 159,384 to the Internal Revenue Service.
The prosecution had recommended a sentence of 57 months in prison.
Chenoweth had control of Illini Contractor Supply’s financial records and control and access to the company’s credit cards and bank account, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois.
Court documents have shown that from 2014 to 2018, Chenoweth issued unauthorized supplier checks in his name or in cash payable to Illini Contractor Supply’s bank account. She also wrote unauthorized paychecks that exceeded her salary and used company credit cards to make payments on her personal credit cards, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. She used her job as an office manager to make false entries in the company’s financial records to avoid detection.
Chenoweth pleaded guilty on May 17 and was released on bail. Bruce ordered him to start serving his sentence on October 5.
The case was investigated by Champaign Police and the IRS, and Deputy United States Attorney Eugene Miller represented the government in the lawsuits.
