The Tony Fisher Award is presented to the News-Herald Football Player of the Year. It is named after the former Ohio winner Mr. Football, a graduate of Euclid, who went on to play Notre Dame and play in the NFL.
The Fisher Award Watchlist may and will change weekly. This is just a first sample of players to watch based on how they performed last season.
This week’s watchlist, in alphabetical order, is:
Ryan Baer, North, Sr.: Started on the Rangers’ offensive and defensive lines in a 22-15 win over Garfield Heights.
Derell Bedingfield, Benedictine, Sr.: Caught two passes for 36 yards and a touchdown, and was also credited with eight tackles (three solo), in the Bengals’ 35-34 overtime win over Walsh Jesuit.
Rick Coleman Jr., Harvey, Sr.: Completed 11 of 21 assists and one touchdown in the Red Raiders’ 50-6 loss to Kirtland.
Marvin Conkle, Benedictine, Sr.: Caught three passes for 76 yards in the Bengals’ 35-34 overtime win over Walsh Jesuit.
Jaxon French, Lake Catholic, Sr.: Throw for 88 yards and run for 15 yards in the Cougars’ early season loss to Dover.
Nikko Georgiou, Kenston, Jr.: Completed 17 of 27 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns in the Bombers’ 35-0 win over Chagrin Falls.
Alex Henry, Chardon: Ran for 84 yards and also threw for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the Hilltoppers 28-14 win over Glenville.
Dominic Johnson, Hawken, Jr.: Carried 23 times for 191 yards and four touchdowns, and also returned an interception for a touchdown, in the Hawks’ 56-28 win over Trinity.
Ryan Miller, Kenston, Sr.: Captured three passes for 63 yards in the Bombers’ 35-0 win over Chagrin Falls.
Jalen Minter, VASJ, Sr.: Threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings’ 44-12 win over CVCA.
Terrence Robinson II, Hawken, father: Carried 13 times for 123 yards and one touchdown, and also completed 7 of 12 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, in the Hawks’ 56-28 win over Trinity.
Tanelle Rose, Brush, So.: Carried 27 times for 224 yards and five touchdowns in the Arcs’ 41-20 win over Lakeside.
Mason Rus, Kirtland, Sr.: Carried seven times for 134 yards and one touchdown in the Hornets’ 50-6 win over Harvey. He also started out as a linebacker.
Ira Sampson, South, Sr.: Ran for 48 yards and a touchdown in the Rebels’ 44-14 win over NDCL. He also started out as a linebacker.
Tyrone Singleton, South, Jr.: Carried 11 times for 67 yards and one touchdown in the Rebels’ 44-14 win over NDCL.
Jacob Snow, mentor, Jr.: Completed 12 of 15 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns, and also ran for 53 yards, in the Cardinals’ 49-7 win over Canton McKinley.
Gage Sullivan, Kirtland, Sire: Caught five passes for 132 yards and four touchdowns in the Hornets’ 50-6 win over Harvey. He also started out as a defensive back.
Curtis Thomas, North, Jr .: Carried four times for 105 yards and a touchdown and caught a pass for 55 yards and a score in the Rangers’ victory over Garfield Heights.
Brenan Vernon, mentor, Jr.: Started at the defensive end in the Cardinals’ 49-7 victory over Canton McKinley, as part of a defense that kept the Bulldogs at 155 yards overall.
Ceejay Yarboro, Benedictine, Sr.: Completed 20 of 32 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns in the Bengals’ 35-34 overtime win over Walsh Jesuit.
