The company has already struggled during the pandemic. Rizzi fears that the increase in the number of cases will scare customers.
“To start all over again … it’s hard, it’s hard,” he said. “And with the holidays ahead, when you expect to do a little better, it’s a very difficult situation.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio warned New Yorkers on Monday that COVID-19 rates were on the rise in the city, but data for the Tottenville zip code shows a positivity rate of around 6.5% – the highest of five districts.
“Since we live here, it’s a bit scary. I do all my shopping here. I have four small children, ”said one resident.
“Honestly, I know more people who have died of heart attacks, illnesses, strokes, other ailments than this COVID thing,” said another.
De Blasio also announced a “day of action” on Staten Island on Tuesday, during which outreach efforts will be made at the ferry terminal and other locations in the borough. People will encourage testing and hand out masks.
But some residents NY1 spoke with questioned the mayor’s direction.
“I didn’t know it was bad here, I don’t even know anyone who had it,” said one Tottenville resident.
Rizzi just hopes his business won’t be affected by additional restrictions. He continues to navigate a new normal at the pizzeria to keep the doors open.
“You are doing your best. You know, you wear your mask. You are constantly washing your hands. You disinfect, ”he says.
