A woman gave birth to a stillborn child because doctors had been shocked by her decision to identify a man at the hospital, according to the authors of a report on treatment-related issues medical transgender people.
The 32-year-old woman presented to the emergency, fearing to have complications during her pregnancy. She had peeing herself after obtaining a positive result in a home pregnancy test and was suffering from severe abdominal pain. But she told the nurses that she was transgender and that she was on the men's list. The doctors who wrote the report on the incident believe that this resulted in mistreatment.
"He was rightly classed as a man," wrote Dr. Daphna Stroumsa, senior author of the University of Michigan. "But this classification has deterred us from taking into account its actual medical needs." (RELATED: "Bad science" behind transgender therapy for children)
She told the nurses that she had not had her period for years, but that she stopped taking testosterone-based drugs and high blood pressure after she lost her insurance. They listed him as an obese man who had stopped taking blood pressure medications and ruled the situation elusive. Later, she gave birth to a stillborn baby.

Stroumsa and the other doctors who reported the case said it was an example of the complications that transgender people face when seeking medical treatment. They did not say where and when the incident occurred. A transgender health specialist attributed the failure of nurses and doctors to management of the situation as being an "implicit bias," and told NBC News that it was important that doctors and doctors nurses do not "throw critical thoughts".
Gillian Branstetter, a transgender rights advocate, told NBC television that her medical knowledge of treating transgender people was inadequate.
"The consequences can be terrible," she said.
