HOWARD CITY – A member of the Tri County Area Schools Education Board won the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) highest honor in 2020 for his efforts to improve his leadership skills, demonstrating his commitment towards student success and its own continuous improvement.
Jill Fennessy was honored on September 29 for her service and dedication to schools in the Tri County area, as well as the current president of the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB).
Fennessy received the prestigious President’s Award from Don Wotruba, Executive Director of MASB.
“Awards are given for courses taken as part of the MASB leadership training program, as well as for attendance at conferences, years of service and leadership activities,” Wotruba said. “There have only been a hundred recipients of this award since the creation of the MASB. “
“Training and professional development help board members keep pace with the rapid and complex changes in public education,” Wotruba added. “Last year, more than 1,300 school board members statewide participated in MASB’s professional development program for elected principals. The hours spent on this training extend beyond the time members spend at their local meetings, events, and reviewing board policies and records.
“Jill is a collaborative leader who takes the time to listen to our students, parents and staff,” said Tri County Superintendent Allen Cumings. “We appreciate his willingness and desire to learn and grow to improve educational opportunities in schools in the Tri County area. Jill works very hard as a board member and as chair of the MASB board to advocate for public education at the state and national levels. We are very grateful to have her as a leader in Tri County and the State of Michigan. “
“I have worked with school boards and public schools for over 19 years and I am still impressed by the commitment of so many members,” said Wotruba. “Schools are under exceptional pressure to innovate and reinvent the way they deliver education. The training gives them the tools to make the best decisions for Michigan school children. The time they spend being servant leaders and honing their skills is unparalleled.
