WARREN – The shortage of candidates in some races leaves entry possibilities to win seats in the November 2 election.
In the case of William J. Williams of Belle Vista Avenue in Hubbard, the current chairman of the city council, he will win his second consecutive election as written. This is because he is the only candidate to file for his current seat.
In 2019, Williams submitted petitions for nomination as a Democrat for his post. But the Trumbull County Electoral Board refused to certify his name on the ballot because he only had 48 valid signatures on his petitions. At least 50 were needed.
Instead, Williams filed as a written candidate. Running without opposition, he obtained 217 votes.
In this year’s election, Williams again filed a written application with no one else applying for the job.
Candidates in writing had until 4 p.m. Monday to file forms with the election office to run for office. Only those who have submitted documents before the deadline are eligible to be candidates in writing. All other names on the writing line are not counted under state law.
Bristol director Douglas Seeman was not certified on August 12 by the board of directors for failing to complete the nomination sections of his petition forms, an automatic disqualification under state law, which left only the incumbent Ramon French candidate for two directorships.
Jim Cicchillo of Nelson Lane and Ronald E. Mahan of Housel Craft Road applied for the position. The candidate with the most written votes will win a seat on the board of directors. It is highly unlikely, but not impossible, that the two could garner more votes than the French and both be elected.
The Girard School Board has two seats on the Nov. 2 ballot, but only incumbent Sue Ellen Harris-Davis applied.
Shannon Hodge of North Ward Avenue and Joseph Datchuk of Mohican Drive filed before the written deadline. Much like the Bristol board, the writing with the most votes will win a seat on the board.
Additionally, River Travis of Roman Street SE has applied for a seat on the Warren at-Large board.
Travis joins four candidates who were certified to have their names on the ballot for the three open seats.
Additionally, Judith White of Bristol Champion Townline Road NW applied for a seat on the Champion School Board.
Three positions are up for election this year and the three incumbents have requested that their names appear on the ballot.
