President Trump announced Friday the appointment of Kelly Knight Craft, the current ambassador to Canada, as the next US ambassador to the United Nations.
"Kelly has done a great job in representing our nation and I have no doubt that under his leadership, our country will be represented at the highest level," Trump said. tweeted. "Congratulations to Kelly and all his family!"
If this appointment is confirmed, Craft will succeed former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who abruptly announced his resignation last October.
The president's announcement comes about a week after state department spokesman Heather Nauert withdrew her name from her post.
"I am grateful to President Trump and the Secretary [Mike] Pompeo for the trust they've shown to have me considered as US ambassador to the United Nations, "said Nauert in a statement released Saturday by the US State Department." A state department source told Fox News at the time that the process, in addition to traveling around the world and between Washington DC and New York to see his family, was becoming too difficult for Nauert.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Welcomed the President's decision to name Craft for this role, saying she was "an outstanding choice for this crucial position".
"Kelly Craft is a strong advocate for US interests and will be a powerful representative of our great country in the United States," his statement said. "She has a long tradition of serving her state and nation and I am confident that she will continue to play with distinction the voice of the United States at the United Nations."
