Speculation swirled around who would get the former president’s seal of approval in the race. Trump teased an endorsement in late May, saying he liked them both very much.

Bush, who is the son of Trump’s former main GOP rival Jeb Bush, was notably the only prominent member of his family to back Trump for president in 2016. The young Bush has often touted his ties to the former President. Before jumping into the attorney general race, Bush tweeted in May that he and Trump spoke on the phone about “how we keep fighting to put America first.”

Bush announced his candidacy for attorney general last month, calling attention to Paxton’s legal problems.

“Enough is enough, Ken,” said Bush at his campaign launch event in June. “You have brought too much scandal and too little integrity to this office.”

Paxton is the subject of an FBI investigation into accusations by former high-ranking collaborators that he abused his office to help a wealthy donor.

After Trump’s approval was announced on Monday, Bush pointed out his legal issues to Paxton in a tweet.

“I am running for attorney general because Texans deserve the integrity and honesty of the office of Texas’ top law enforcement official,” Bush tweeted. “The Texans deserve a candidate without a whitelist of existing and potential indictments.”
