  • In an interview with The Federalist, former President Trump lambasted Senator Ben Sasse.
  • “You know, it’s a sleazebag,” Trump said.
  • “He was like a little boy. He behaved so well,” Trump said of Sasse seeking his approval.

Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his disdain for Senator Ben Sasse, calling the Nebraska Republican a “loser” and a “sleazebag” and saying the senator acted like a “quiet little boy” as he sought Trump’s approval for re-election in 2020.

Trump made the remarks in an interview with Mollie Hemingway of the Federalist, whose book “Rigged: How The Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections” is scheduled for release on October 12.

“Terrible senator. It started early on,” Trump said of Sasse, saying the senator was hostile to the former president when he first met the Republican Senate caucus. “He’s actually stupid, because you know the problem with Republicans is that they don’t stick together. You don’t have Mitt Romney and Ben Sasse in the Democratic Party.

Trump spoke at length about Sasse, recounting an exchange with the senses. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Ted Cruz of Texas, who urged Trump to support Sasse’s 2020 re-election bid.

“I said, ‘Keep him away. The guy is a loser.’ So they said, ‘No, no, no. He wants to make peace,’ ”Trump told Hemingway. “He was like a little boy. He had behaved so well. He didn’t say a word. And they explained why I had to let him come home.”

“You have to see him at this meeting. He was like a quiet little boy sitting right there,” Trump continued. “And they spoke on his behalf and you know he couldn’t have been better. He hasn’t said bad things about me for two years.”

The former president would ultimately back Sasse, sparing him a potential main challenge. “So I end up supporting a guy who’s a sleazebag. By the way, you can quote me on all of that,” Trump said.

Asked for comment, Sasse spokesman James Wegmann said of the endorsement story: “More recycled nonsense? Totally wrong. We’ve been clear from day one,” while reporting a tweet on the issue from August 2020.

Trump also noted an appeal leak between Sasse and donors in October, where the Nebraska senator widely criticized Trump.

“The way he kisses the buttocks of dictators. I mean, the way he ignores that Uyghurs are literally in concentration camps in Xinjiang. As of yet, he hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong -Kongais, Sasse reportedly said on the call. “The United States now regularly sells our allies under his leadership, the way it treats women, spends like a drunken sailor.”

“He makes fun of evangelicals behind closed doors,” Sasse continued. “His family treated the presidency as a business opportunity. He flirted with white supremacists.”

“He was phoning his donors which he basically leaked to the press. Okay. You know, that’s a sleazebag,” Trump said of the call.

Trump also hit Sasse for criticizing a planned US troop withdrawal from Germany, alleging the senator wanted to see more troops die in Afghanistan.

“I want to get troops out of Germany. You know, some of them, because we have 54,000 troops in Germany costing us billions of dollars,” Trump said. “Germany treats us badly on trade and a lot of other things. And so I’m going to cut it down by 25,000. And I hear Little Ben Sasse say how we shouldn’t be doing it. You know, he wants to stay in. Afghanistan, let the soldiers stay there and have their faces and arms ripped off for another 19 years and die. “
