The White House's 2020 budget proposal recommends reducing the NSF's budget to $ 7.1 billion from the current level of $ 8.1 billion. The 12% decrease would exceed the one-figure reduction in non-discretionary overall funding in the Congress President's budget request.
The NSF provides about a quarter of all federal research grants and covers areas such as engineering, mathematics, computer science and social sciences. It also finances the purchase of scientific equipment on a large scale.
According to the NSF website, researchers funded by a foundation have won 236 Nobel Prizes.
The Trump 2020 budget proposal also calls for a dramatic reduction in funding for education, agriculture, health programs, transportation and the state department.
Congress largely ignored Trump's previous requests for deep discretionary budget cuts and has steadily increased NSF funding levels in recent years.
