President Trump said Friday that the Obama era decree granting protections to some immigrants who came to the country as miners was a "totally illegal document" that former President Obama had never had the right to sign.

The DACA program (Deferred Action for Child Arrivals) was signed by Obama in 2012 and gave more than 700,000 immigrants that activists call "Dreamers" a two-year renewable reprieve after deportation and the possibility of obtain a work permit.

Trump, who had been pushing for the repeal of the DACA in 2016, announced a plan to phase out the program in 2017, but was blocked by federal courts that ruled that phasing out could not happen. Supporters of DACA also argued that Trump's planned termination of the program constituted a violation of federal law requiring adequate notice periods and commentary prior to the change of certain federal rules, as well as other equivalent constitutional guarantees.
The case is now headed to the Supreme Court, where judges will begin hearing their pleadings from October. A decision will probably come in 2020 and could galvanize activists on both sides of the political spectrum in the middle of an election year.

However, on Friday, Trump also renewed his calls to Congress for an agreement on immigration including a solution to the DACA, to which the White House has already expressed its openness.
