Congress should return from break as gun control debate heats up
Pressure is mounting on congressional lawmakers after mass shooting in Odessa, Texas; Matt Bennett, former director of public affairs for Americans at Gun Safety, and Karl Rove, former Fox News associate, former chief of staff of President George W. Bush, join the debate.
Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., Said Sunday that he hoped that President Trump would inform Senate leaders of the type of gun control legislation that he would be willing to sign.
In the midst of several shootings in recent months, Blunt said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Will not introduce any gun control legislation for which Trump will not carry his signature. .

Gun control legislation has been the subject of passionate debate in Congress for decades, but has recently taken a new urgency as a result of several shootings across the country. In August, consecutive mass shootings in Texas and Ohio left at least 31 dead, just days after another gunman opened fire at a California festival, killing four people and 13 wounded. Last weekend, another gunman in Texas killed seven people and wounded more than 20 in an outburst between the cities of Odessa and Midland.
Blunt said that one of the areas in which an agreement exists between Republicans and Democrats is to find a way to detect people with mental health problems and treat them earlier in the hope of ### 39, prevent further shootings.
"There is a moment when we can develop what we are already doing on this front," he said.
The Texas authorities have however stated that despite the failure of a background check because of a mental health problem, the shooter at last weekend's killing, Seth Aaron Ator, had was able to procure a firearm by purchasing the weapon that he had used during a private transaction.

Under federal law, sales of private firearms – such as between friends, relatives or even strangers – are not subject to a federal background check. Some 21 states plus Washington, DC, have laws that require a background check of some private sales, but Texas is not one. Two other states – Maryland and Pennsylvania – require a background check of handguns, but not shoulder guns.
Blunt argued that the president would probably not sign and that he would not be on the table at the moment. Trump said earlier this year that he was in favor of universal background checks, but has since reviewed this comment.
The Democratic-controlled House passed a universal bill on background checks in February, but the Republican-majority Senate did not call for a vote.
