Trump tears up McConnell over debt ceiling deal with Democrats

Trump made the remarks at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, where Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Senator Chuck Grassley also took the stage.

“To think we had 11 Republicans with an overtime. Led by Mitch McConnell, can you believe it?” Trump spoke about the debt ceiling deal. “And you know what that does? It gives Democrats more time, two months, gives them more time to find out. They can now have two more months to figure out how to fuck us, okay.”

McConnell proposed a debt ceiling deal that kicked off negotiations with Democrats, with the Senate voting 50-48 last week to extend the debt ceiling until early December. Eleven Senate Republicans, including McConnell, broke ranks to vote with All Democrats to overcome an obstruction so the measure could go forward.
The former president, who has repeatedly alluded to a 2024 presidential bid, also criticized McConnell for not supporting efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

“Mitch McConnell should have challenged this election, because even then we had a lot of material to challenge this election. He should have challenged the election,” Trump said. “He’s only a leader because he raises a lot of money and gives it to senators, that’s the only thing he has. It’s his only form of leadership.”

McConnell lambasted Trump’s baseless claims of widespread electoral fraud, for which there is no evidence in the 2020 presidential election.

Trump has attacked McConnell several times this year amid freezing tensions.
The former president called McConnell an “austere, sullen, and smileless political hack” after the Kentucky senator criticized Trump for his behavior on and after the day of the insurgency on the U.S. Capitol.
He also called on Senate Republicans to replace McConnell with a new leader in an April interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, and in July Trump insulted McConnell as an “Old Crow,” which McConnell said to CNN was “quite an honor”.

“Old Crow is Henry Clay’s favorite bourbon,” he said at the time.
