reMissouri Democratic Representative William Lacy Clay said Thursday that the Trump government was trying to limit the political power of minority voters by adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
Clay also called for Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to step down to handle the census, Ross said in front of the House's oversight committee.
"Mr. Secretary, you have lied to Congress, you have misled the American people and you are complicit in the Trump administration's intention to suppress the growing political power of the non-white population, said Clay: You have already done a lot of trouble at the 2020 census, and you have no credibility and you should, in my opinion, resign.
"Is there a question about that, sir?" Ross answered before asking for a break.

Democrats in the House argued that e-mails provided to the committee showed that, contrary to Ross's contention, Ross wanted to add a question on citizenship to the census before the Department of Justice requested it at the office in December 2017.
Ross has already testified that the issue of citizenship was added "only" at the request of the GM. Ross denied Thursday that he misled Congress on the origin of the issue, which appeared just recently in the 2000 census, under the administration of former President Bill Clinton.
Advocacy groups, such as the Brennan Center for Justice, believe that such an issue would lead to a decrease in the number of people responding to the census, which could distort the number of members of the House of Representatives and seats in the electoral college. The Census Bureau's question did not ask about legal status, and Ross stated that the officers of this office face stiff penalties for informing federal law enforcement officials of respondents.
