Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched a meteoric attack on the most powerful post-Trump Republican in Washington, calling Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell a “no-smile political hack” who should be fired from its functions.

Trump was acquitted by the Senate with just seven Republicans joining Democrats voting to convict. The 57-43 vote was well below the Constitution’s two-thirds requirement for sentencing. Because he was acquitted, Trump remains eligible to run for president again in 2024.
McConnell won’t be re-elected until 2026, but the 2022 Republican primaries will likely be a proxy war between the pro-Trump and pro-McConnell factions.
