Donald Trump’s still active presidential campaign committee on Monday officially disowned political groups affiliated with the nascent Patriot Party.
Why is this important: Trump briefly touched on the possibility of creating a new political party to compete with the GOP – with him at the helm. But others have formed their own “Patriot Party” entities over the past week, and Trump’s team is keen to make it clear that it has nothing to do with them.
What is happening: Donald J. Trump for President Inc., the former president’s official campaign committee, filed a notice with the Federal Election Commission to officially distance himself from a new Patriot Party PAC.
- “DJTFP places this disallowance notice on the public record for fear of confusion among the public, who could be led to believe that the activities of the Patriot Party were authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP – or that contributions to this unauthorized committee are made at DJTFP – when that’s not true, “the committee wrote.
What we hear: In a statement to Axios ahead of Monday’s filing, Trump spokesman Jason Miller said his team had nothing to do with this group or any similar effort.
- “We don’t support this effort, have nothing to do with it, and only know it through public reporting,” Miller said in a text message.
Trump briefly raised the possibility to create – and lead – an alternative political party to compete with the GOP.
- Although he quickly gave up on the idea, a host of groups have sprung up lately to promote the “Patriot Party” brand.
The Patriot Party group the disowned Trump campaign was only one of the few to file documents with the FEC in recent days.
- He falsely stated in FEC documents that he had a joint fundraising deal with the Trump campaign committee.
- Another group formed on Monday, the MAGA Patriots’ Party National Committee, also falsely claimed to have a similar deal.
