WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco-McLennan County Health District officials confirmed a case of tuberculosis at Waco University High School, WISD Health Services Coordinator Rhiannon Settles said Thursday in a letter to parents.

"This person is currently being treated," says Settles.

The letter did not specify whether the person diagnosed was a student, a faculty member, or a staff member, but indicated that the possibility that TB was transmitted to a student or staff member of the school was minimal.

The district said it was working closely with the district health since it had been informed of the diagnosis.

"As a precaution, district facilities in which any possible exposure would have been sustained have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected," wrote Settles.

The district is also working with the health district to identify anyone who may have been exposed, wrote Settles.

Tuberculosis is transmitted by bacteria in suspension in the air.

"If someone breathes the germ, it can cause an infection of the lungs or another part of the body," says Settles in his letter.

"Everyone who breathes the bacteria will not have TB."

"Although tuberculosis is contagious, it is not easy to catch," she wrote.

"You are far more likely to contract TB from someone you live with or work with than a stranger."
