A “non-banned list” containing the names of exempt streamers appears to be among the Twitch documents that leaked earlier this week.
There has long been speculation that Tic gives special treatment to some popular streamers, the big earners of the platform, by not enforcing the terms of service even when they have clearly been violated. This idea was essentially accepted as a fact when streamer Alinity was not banned from Twitch, even after treating her chat in a way that many viewers considered abuse on more than one occasion.
The assumption that Twitch streamers with the largest audience aren’t held to the same standards as other content creators has also been bolstered by the platform handing out bans that many see as little more than a slap on the wrist. . For example, when Amouranth was banned for licking the microphone while tilting her butt towards the camera, she was only suspended from Twitch for three days. And although she has been banned several times for sexual content, it is still for a negligible period and seemingly of no long-term consequences for repeated violations.
On October 6, an anonymous person claimed to have hacked Twitch and uploaded a 125 GB file to 4chan, which contained a plethora of content such as source code, streamer payment receipts and encrypted passwords. While the majority of the information in the file has been revealed to date, some information is still being released, including a list that purports to be a not-to-ban list of certain content creators.
First posted on Twitch streamer Asmongold’s subreddit, the list contains the names of the streamers followed by a reason why the person shouldn’t be banned. A few names in the document, like Ricegum and Loltyler1, were given the reason: “Don’t hang; escalate violations to [redacted]@ twitch.tv. At a glance, the list appears to confirm that selected Twitch streamers are exempt from being immediately banned for violating terms of service, with instructions to instead escalate cases to specific Twitch staff.
A number of other names also appear on the list, which appears to be an excerpt from a larger document. For example, the name “djwheat” has a reason listed as “minor”. Twitch content creator djWHEAT used to play streaming games with his son, miniWHEAT. Some people have interpreted the “minor” flag to mean that, if the djWHEAT feed is reported to have a minor child on screen, moderators should ignore the report because it has already been investigated and has. received a green light. If this interpretation is true, it would mean that the list includes the names of content creators who should not be banned for the reasons stated, including Tyler1 and RiceGum, who apparently should not be suspended at all by regular moderators.
