Something strange is happening on Twitch. The most watched games on the site in recent weeks have not been Fortnite, or CS: GO, or League of Legends, or one of the other esports – which is almost unheard of for the site. Instead, the game that everyone spends most of their time watching from a distance is a small MMO that you may have heard of, called World of Warcraft.
Well, to clarify, it's WoW Classic, a recreation ofBurning Crusades-era Sensational published at the same time as the 15th anniversary of the game. classical was released last week to a lot of joy. Overloaded servers with literal lines of people looking to execute quests, all indications are that people are superimposed to return to WoW. Enemies can not appear quickly enough to account for all players trying to kill them. It's almost comical, really.
The first week of its release, over a million viewers watched WoW Classic on various channels. By comparing, Fortnite usually draws somewhere in the 200,000 spectator area these days. TwitchTracker has considered it the most-watched game on the site, with over 55 million viewing hours this week alone. To give some context, the most watched then is CS: GO with 19.2 million, and Fortnite trails with a 17 million relatively unimpressive.
Ordinary, something with this kind of audience spike would be a bit suspicious – the rumor says that one of the reasons Apex Legends had an advance on Fortnite shortly after its release was that the streamers had been paid to go to Mountain peak for a moment. But I think that in this case, it is a good nostalgia to the old.
