Twitter is testing the upvote and downvote buttons on tweets

Twitter is working on new positive and negative vote reactions for tweets to accompany the usual retweet and reply options. Twitter confirmed it was testing the functionality for a small group of users on iOS, and it has already been spotted according to many tweets users who are part of the test group.

Twitter writes that iOS users can see up and down votes in several different styles (up and down arrows, heart icon and down arrow, and thumbs up and thumbs down icons) and that it is testing the feature to “understand the types of responses you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more.” Currently, votes are not public.

While Twitter hasn’t said whether it plans to add upward and downward voting as a permanent feature (or how voting affects what you see in your feed), there are clear parallels to be drawn with Reddit, which features upvotes and negatives as a way to bring up replies, replies, and favorite posts from a subreddit. Twitter says that up-and-down votes don’t impact the order of tweets at this time.

Twitter has played with other types of tweet interactions in the past, including reactions that seemed to mimic the emoji reactions Facebook uses for Facebook posts and Messenger messages. Twitter product manager Kayvon Beykpour also said the company planned to work on dislikes last year, saying the feature was one of Twitter’s many “top priorities”. in response to a user’s tweet.
