Twitter users say fleets are ripe for harassment

Twitter says it’s working on a fix for both issues. A spokesperson confirms the fleets are supposed to meet blocking settings and the company plans to add a notification feature.

These are not the only potential problems that have arisen, however. Others noted that fleets allow users to effectively bypass Twitter’s direct messaging settings, as responses from the fleet go straight to your inbox, even if your DMs would otherwise be closed. For some, you might expect it. After all, it reflects the way Story replies work on Instagram: if someone can see your Story, they can message you too. But it could be less than ideal for Twitter users, especially those who are frequently the target of harassment, who might expect to have more control over who can send them messages.

In a statement, a Twitter spokesperson said the company “always listens to comments” and “keeping people safe on Twitter is a top priority.” The spokesperson added that fleets are subject to the same rules as other content on the service, including warning labels.
