SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (KWQC) – Two confirmed cases of legionellosis have been linked to a hotel in Schaumburg, Ill.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recently linked the cases to the AmericInn by Wyndham hotel and is currently studying the cluster with the Cook County Public Health Department.
The two confirmed cases reported using water in their rooms, hot tub and pool during hotel stays in July and August 2019. Legionellosis is a serious lung infection that can be contracted by breathing small droplets of water containing Legionella bacteria.
Officials say that this is not passed from person to person. Outbreaks are typically associated with buildings or structures with complex water systems, such as hotels, hospitals, long-term care facilities and cruise ships.
People at increased risk of Legionellosis are those aged 50 and over or those with certain risk factors, such as being a current or former smoker, a chronic illness or a weakened immune system.
In 2018, Illinois reported 510 cases of legionellosis throughout the state, of which 242 have been confirmed so far in 2019.
