The Tennessee Department of Health has announced that two more cases of measles have been discovered in East Tennessee. This brings to three the number of cases in the state.
The state health department said the two new cases were associated with the first case of measles.
The Tennessee Department of Health sent a warning last week that it was reported that people may have been exposed to measles in Chattanooga after a patient went to a local petrol station. "We were expecting more cases of measles in the first case, and these new cases occurred in people we had identified and monitored as first patient contacts," said Michelle Fiscus, MD, Medical Director. Measles continues to spread in the United States, with more than 704 cases reported so far this year in 22 states. The US health authorities updated Monday the national count. It has already eclipsed the total for any complete year since 1994, when 963 cases were reported.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this year, 44 people have caught the disease while traveling to another country. Some of them have triggered epidemics in the United States, mainly among unvaccinated people. This includes the largest epidemics in the Orthodox Jewish communities in New York and surrounding areas.
