The New Mexico Department of Health urges all people who have been injected into an Albuquerque spa to be tested after two people who have been given a "vampire facial" have been diagnosed with HIV.
The agency opened an HIV-testing survey of two VIP Spa clients who received "vampire" facials – a procedure that injects a person's blood into their face to cool their skin – between March and September 2018.
The two people contracted the same virus, which increases the likelihood that both cases result from procedures performed at VIP Spa, health officials said.
According to the State Department of Health, VIP Spa closed on September 7, 2018 after an inspection revealed problems handling needles.
Kathy Kunkel, secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health's office, said in a statement that more than 100 clients who had received injection services had been tested for HIV, as well as for the treatment of HIV. hepatitis B and C.
"Screening is important for everyone because there are effective treatments for HIV and many hepatitis infections," Kunkel said.
The procedure was popularized in 2013 by Kim Kardashian West after she posted a selfie on Instagram with blood on her face.
