We are moving closer to an open America where quarantine warrants will be a thing of the past, but how far into the future remains uncertain. The first rounds of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed, and government officials hope everyone will have access to them in the coming months. Within the black community, there have been conversations regarding skepticism regarding the vaccine, especially given the historical context of blacks being used as medical experiments in America. Tyler Perry hopes to allay those fears with his next BET feature, The Covid-19 vaccine and the black community: a special from Tyler Perry.

Perry sat down with CBS this morning to talk about the special while explaining why he decided to receive the two doses of the vaccine. “I am not taking this vaccine because I want you to take it, I want to give you the information so that you can make your own choices” the media mogul. “I think that’s what it is, education and information.” Perry recognizes and this can “[raise] flags for us as the African American people “but he still believes education is key.

The filmmaker admitted that he too didn’t trust the vaccine when it was first announced, but after doing his research he was more comfortable with the process. “I think it’s just important for people to know that if you take your chance with Covid you never know how it’s going to affect you and it could affect your health in the long run.”

Perry’s specials on BET this Thursday (Jan. 28) at 9:00 p.m. Check out his clip with Gayle King below.
