U.S. stock index futures edged up early Friday amid weak trading activity due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were showing an opening gain of more than 50 points. Futures on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also suggested a higher open.

U.S. stock markets are expected to close at 1 p.m. ET after the holidays.

More broadly, global equities retreated from their rally earlier this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell on Wednesday, marking a pause after surpassing 30,000 points on Tuesday.

The rally came after the Trump administration began the transition process for President-elect Joe Biden and news regarding the new president’s appointments.

In Europe, shares of AstraZeneca slid on Friday with questions about how AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford tested their vaccine against the coronavirus. The head of the White House vaccine task force expressed doubts earlier in the week about the trial data and the drug’s effectiveness rate.
