Fall classes begin September 16, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. PT and end December 9, 2021.

Free courses are offered to anyone (students and UAB employees, or the general public) aged at least 18 and interested in learning English. All new students must take an online placement test before September 3 to register for fall classes. Based on the online placement test, students are placed in four different course levels to learn from peers with similar language skills.

Classes are taught by graduate students in training to become ESOL teachers. Throughout the weekly classes, English learners can expect to participate in activities that incorporate listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar skills.

Community English classes are a well-established tradition within the international UAB community, taking place on campus for over 20 years. Over the past few years, the courses have been attended and taught by participants from over 40 countries. No documentation for the application is required.
