Students and faculty at the UAB School of Education spent time reading and interacting with elementary school students across the region to celebrate the defense of literacy.

International Literacy Day highlights literacy as a basic human right and amplifies information on literary disparities around the world.

“The best way for children to become readers is if they have access to the books they want to read and have time to read them every day,” said Kelly Hill, Ph.D., professor. deputy in English language learner education and Early childhood education at UAB.

In addition to reading to Kindergarten to Grade 2 children, over 479 books were donated to students at Glen Iris. The donation provided each class with books for the bedroom library and allowed each child to choose a book for themselves to take home to read with their family and add – or start – their own. home library.

In addition, UAB provided families with additional resources to support and promote reading at home.

“International Literacy Day was a perfect opportunity to collaborate and promote reading at home,” said Hill. “Through thoughtful planning, we were able to collaborate with several community stakeholders in providing books and resources for families to continue and improve on what they are already doing to support their children as readers.

The UAB was joined in their efforts this year by the Maryann Manning Family Literacy Center and the IMPACT-PD grant team, a grant funded by the English Language Acquisition Office of the United States Department of Education. -United.
