UAE just captured stunning photo of Mars

Mars seems to be the center of the universe these days. Figuratively, of course.

The probe entered orbit of Mars last Tuesday and is expected to stay around the planet for a full Martian year, which equates to about two years for us Terrans. It aims to provide a complete picture of the Martian atmosphere and its layers, according to the mission’s website.

Bin Zayed shared the news with an uplifting message, saying he hopes “the mission will lead to new discoveries on Mars that will benefit humanity.”

According to BBC News, the image was captured on Wednesday about 15,000 miles from the Martian surface, about a day after the probe entered orbit.

Viewers can spot the planet’s north pole at the top left of the image, according to BBC News. The largest volcanic system on Mars, Olympus Mons, can be seen in the center of the photo. And a giant canyon system, known as the Valles Marineris, can be found in the eastern part of the planet (although it is partially covered by a cloud).

The UAE plans to post more photos like these throughout the Hope Probe mission.
