The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will withdraw more than one million doses of yellow fever from its emergency stocks after the death of 10 people in the south. west of Ethiopia.

The deadly mosquito-borne disease was confirmed in Wollayeta, in the Southern Nations Region, and the infection began on August 21 in a fever patient, resulting in 35 suspected cases.

"This outbreak is of concern because the Ethiopian population is very vulnerable to yellow fever because of its recent exposure to the disease and the widespread lack of vaccination," said a Monday report from WHO.

Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, headache, yellowing, joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

Although only a small proportion of patients develop severe symptoms, half of them die within 7 to 10 days.

All confirmed cases have been reported in the Ova and Oraida regions and no other confirmed cases have been recorded since the vaccination campaign in that country in mid-October, affecting approximately 31,000 people.

The WHO, however, said that the disease could spread further, including by conflict in the region, and that it would withdraw 1.45 million doses of its vaccine stockpiles for a broad campaign that should start "without further ado".
