WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A rare and serious condition, paralyzing children, has peaked this fall, although it is still very rare, health authorities said.
The polio-like illness, which particularly affects young people, also experienced a similar spread in 2014 and 2016 in the fall. He is known scientifically as IFM and recorded a few dozen cases in August and September.
Nancy Masoner, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, described the disease as a mystery. "We do not know who is the most at risk, nor what is the cause, nor its long-term consequences," she said.
