The spacecraft "Baby Colombo", a joint venture of European and Japanese space agencies, was launched Saturday morning for a mission to Mercury.
The satellite was launched aboard the Ariane 5 from the European spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana at 045 GMT.
This 6.4-meter, 4.1-tonne vehicle is expected to reach Mercury in 2025, when the two satellites that compose them separate and enter different orbits to study the planet's powerful magnetic field, the smallest in the world. solar system and the closest to us.
And "Baby Colombo" is a joint venture of the European Space Agency and the Japan Space Agency.
The vehicle is named after the Italian mathematician Giuseppe "Bibi" Colombo and is one of the most ambitious projects launched by the European Space Agency.
