Paris- Astronomers have discovered that the halo around the Milky Way galaxy was formed from the debris of a collision with another galaxy more than 10 billion years ago.
Scientists have long investigated whether the Milky Way galaxy was "nurtured" by collisions with other smaller galaxies.
In an attempt to answer this question and to separate the different theories, a team of researchers studied the information collected by the European telescope Gaia, sent to space in 2013. This telescope allowed to map from 3 to 700 million of stars in a galaxy. Milky Way and identify many distances from the Earth and its speeds. "We did not expect most stars in the galaxy's halo to have one," said Amina Helmi, a space scientist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. "It's a very homogeneous group," she said.
