Google launches anti-censorship tool

Google has unveiled a tool to fight against censorship of the press in the world and tests it first in Venezuela. The journalists claim to be fighting the government, which is seeking to conceal information revealing corruption and human rights abuses on the internet.

Venezuelan users have complained in recent years about their inability to access news sites. By pressing a page, they are told that they do not exist – a problem largely attributed to government actions to block access to important information.

"It's very hard to get news for people," said Melanio Escobar, a Venezuelan journalist who had tested the Google app before it was launched this month. "The government controls the Internet as the owner of CANTV, the largest ISP with more than 2.5 million customers."
