High blood sugar increases the risk of tuberculosis

Millions of people around the world with high blood sugar levels could face a higher risk of tuberculosis, experts warned after presenting their new research findings at a health conference at The Hague.
According to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), about 10 million people have been infected with tuberculosis, a highly contagious disease caused by a negative mutation of mucus, while experts fear that the sharp increase the number of diabetic patients exposes millions of other patients to the risk of tuberculosis.
In a study presented a few days ago at the World Health Organization's (WHO) lung health conference, researchers at the London School of Hygienic and Tropical Medicine analyzed the blood of people with tuberculosis and diabetes in four countries – South Africa, Romania, Indonesia and Peru.
They then performed a blood test on people with high blood sugar who had not reached the diabetes threshold. They found that blood samples from these non-diabetic subjects contained the same molecules found in TB and diabetic patients.
"This indicates that the risk of TB is even higher before a person gets diabetes," said Ijay Kumar, director of research at the International Union for Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, who is not part of the study.
In some countries, such as India, which has a quarter of the world's TB patients, everyone diagnosed with the disease must automatically be screened for it. diabetes, and vice versa.
Kumar said health authorities in these countries should make diagnoses of tuberculosis in patients with high blood sugar levels.
He pointed out that "millions" of people around the world with high blood sugar levels are at greater risk.
Scientists have already identified the link between the incidence of hypersensitivity and diabetes without explaining it well. Diabetes reduces the ability of the immune system to increase the risk of TB.

"The most vulnerable countries are those where TB is most prevalent and diabetes, in India, Pakistan, China and several countries of Southeast Asia, is increasing sharply," said Paul Jensen, head of the International Tuberculosis Federation.
Jensen described the situation as "a whirlwind," adding that "if diabetes and tuberculosis coincide, treatment becomes more complicated."
"The risk of tuberculosis increases at a later stage, resulting in death," he said.
TB control efforts have focused on the prevention of AIDS, a disease that strikes the immune system and increases the risk of diabetes-related TB.
Jensen and Kumar stressed that more work needed to be done to protect the population from the increased risk of tuberculosis and diabetes.
