The findings of a new study have sounded the alarm in pregnant women in Asia, after high rates of fetal death at birth were due to maternal exposure to smoke secondary during pregnancy. According to a study conducted at York University, more than 50% of pregnant women in Armenia, Indonesia, Jordan, Bangladesh and Nepal are exposed to second-hand smoke during pregnancy.

The study relied on health data for 30 developing countries in Asia between 2008 and 2013. The results showed that in 5 out of 30 countries, pregnant women were two times more likely to smoke than the world average!

The researchers found that only 1% of fetal deaths during delivery in Pakistan were due to maternal smoking, while 7%

The study was published in BMG Tobacco Control Journal, the first of its kind to provide national statistical estimates of the relationship between passive smoking and fetal death at birth.

The study advocated the development of national advocacy and intervention strategies to protect mothers from the complications of passive smoking on the Jenin.
