To investigate the relationship between maternal smoking and childhood injury, the team reviewed the results of 11 scientific studies conducted in this regard.
They found that maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with a 46% increase in the risk of neonatal death, one of the most common eye diseases in children.
The researchers also found that smoking 10 cigarettes a day during pregnancy was associated with a 79% increase in the risk of developing a disease in their children.
"Smoking among mothers is a public health problem, especially in developing countries, and it has a major impact on birth control," said Dr. Zukson Low, research director.
Previous studies have shown that women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have children with health problems, including low birth weight, premature birth, congenital anomalies, and sudden infant death syndrome.
She added that maternal smoking also affects the lungs' effectiveness in newborns, which are major causes of infant mortality, in addition to its negative impact on physical growth and maturity in adolescence. .
The World Health Organization (WHO) said in its latest report that tobacco kills nearly 6 million people in the Eastern Mediterranean Region every year, including more than 5 million smokers and tobacco users existing and that about 600 000 non-smokers are exposed to second-hand smoke.
Smoking is one of the main causes of many chronic diseases, including cancer, lung disease, heart disease and blood vessels.
