Causes of tonsillitis
Tonsillitis occurs most often because of a common infection, but bacterial infection can also cause tonsillitis.
Streptococcal streptococcus (nodal group A) is the most common cause of tonsillitis, identical to that of the bacterium responsible for strep throat. Other strains of streptococci and other bacteria can also cause tonsillitis.
Complications
Inflammation or swelling of the tonsils due to recurrent or persistent (chronic) infection can cause tonsillitis in complications such as:
Difficulty breathing.
Sleep apnea (obstructive sleep apnea).
