Tea and berries protect against heart disease

A recent study suggests that a cup of tea or a handful of cranberries a day can protect against the risk of heart disease.

A study of almost 53,000 people over a 23-year period showed that people who consume tea and cranberries on a daily basis are less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Scientists believe that cranberries are good for the health of the heart and brain because they are rich in antioxidants that protect against infections.

The study, conducted at the University of Western Australia, indicates that 12,000 heart attacks have developed among study participants in nearly two decades, indicating that they do not regularly drink tea or berries .

People who took 500 mg of flavonoids a day using tea or berries were less likely to develop heart disease, the researchers said.

Consuming large amounts of flavonoids has also reduced the risk of peripheral arterial disease, caused by fatty deposits in the arteries that limit blood flow to muscles and strokes.

In addition, the study found that smokers and alcohol consumers needed more than 500 mg of flavonoids a day, reported the Daily Mail.
