UB posted another record enrollment this fall, surpassing 30,000 students for the third year in a row.
The number of students on the North, South and Downtown campuses reached 30,523 for the fall semester of the 2021-22 academic year, according to Lee Melvin, vice-president of enrollment management. This includes 20,006 undergraduate students and 10,517 graduate students.
The total enrollment at UB is 32,337 if UB students in Singapore and graduate program in India are included.
These numbers match the goals of President Satish K. Tripathi, who set university-wide goals in 2015 to raise the academic profile of incoming students, expand diversity among the student body and increase enrollment by 2,000. students.
“We have set a enrollment goal of enlisting 30,000 by 2020. We achieved that goal in 2019 and we are maintaining that enrollment,” said Melvin.
This fall, UB added a stronger and more diverse freshman class of 4,179 degree-seeking students, Melvin said.
“Our freshman class of over 4,100 students is highly skilled and academically talented. Our student body is more diverse than in previous years with more students of color, women and international students, ”said Provost A. Scott Weber.
UB has also seen a significant increase in the number of graduate students, the number of which has increased by almost 9% compared to last fall. A large majority of graduate university units have seen an increase in enrollment.
Melvin attributes the increase in UB enrollment to several factors, including its recruitment efforts, the depth and breadth of its programs, and the university’s overall reputation for attracting students from across the region, from the New York State and the world.
UB became the # 1 public university in New York City and # 31 in the United States in the recent Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education College Rankings. UB was also ranked # 38 among public universities nationwide this year by US News & World Report.
Training a first-year class at UB was different this year with the introduction of optional testing admission policies for SUNY schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, over a third of UB’s freshmen submitted their scores for an average SAT of 1280. The GPA for this year’s freshman class was 92.
Other characteristics of this year’s incoming class:
- Enrollment is on the rise among historically under-represented students, who now make up one-fifth of the freshman class. The number of black freshmen is up 12% from last year, while the number of Hispanic / Latin freshmen is up 1%.
“Our enrollment record this year translates into historic enrollments for our under-represented students,” notes Melvin.
- Enrollment is up 1.5% from last year for first-year students.
- Twenty-nine percent of freshmen are from western New York State, over 10% are from out-of-state or overseas, and the rest are from across the board. of New York State.
Overall, UB also saw a significant increase among all international students, the number of which increased by 852 from last fall to a total of 4,463.
“A majority of international students were unable to make it to the United States last year and have postponed their admission until this year,” says Melvin.
