Two months after being sacked from Auburn, former Tigers football coach Gus Malzahn has another option.
The Orlando Sentinel reported on Sunday that UCF had offered Malzahn his job as head football coach. Malzahn had been mentioned as a potential candidate after UCF hired Terry Mohajir as athletic director. Mohajir and Malzahn worked together in Arkansas.
It is not known if Malzahn will accept the job. If he did, he would replace Josh Heupel who left to lead the Tennessee program, where he works with former Auburn assistant defense line coach Rodney Garner and wide receiver coach Kodi Burns.
Malzahn led the Tigers for eight seasons and finished with a 68-35 record. He was the offensive coordinator of the 2010 national championship team and the head coach while Auburn was a 2013 national finalist. He won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award and many others in 2013. The Tigers also made the SEC championship in 2017.
On December 13, 2020, Malzahn was sacked after a 24-10 victory over Mississippi State. The Tigers finished the regular season 6-4 and then lost the Citrus Bowl to Northwestern under interim coach Kevin Steele. After Bryan Harsin took over as Auburn’s coach, all of Malzahn’s coaches except running backs coach Cadillac Williams were replaced.
The Knights team that Malzahn could take over has a 47-15 record since 2016. The 2017-18 seasons have been strong, with a record-breaking 25-game school streak and winning back-to-back league titles. ‘American Athletic Conference. Over the past two years, however, the Knights have struggled. They have suffered seven losses in the past two years and have gone 6-4 in 2020.
