Colorado woman with stage 5 kidney disease struggles to find a new hospital to perform a kidney transplant after a state health system refused the transplant because she and her donor failed were not vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“I am here, ready to be a direct donor for her. It does not affect any other patient on the transplant list,” Jaimee FougnerLeilani Lutali’s kidney donor told CBS4. “How can I sit here and allow them to kill my friend when I have a perfectly good kidney and can save her life?” “
Lutali said he received a letter from Colorado’s UCHealth health system in late September explaining that she and Fougner had 30 days to begin the vaccination process. They would be taken off the kidney transplant list if they refused the injections.

“I said I would sign a medical waiver. I have to sign a waiver for the transplant itself anyway, freeing them from anything that could go wrong,” Lutali said. “It’s surgery, it’s invasive. I’m signing a waiver for my life. I don’t know why I can’t sign a waiver for the COVID vaccine.”
In August, Lutali said the hospital told him the vaccine would not be a prerequisite for the operation.
“At the end of August, they confirmed that there was no need for a COVID vaccine at that time,” Lutali told CBS4. “Fast-forward to September 28. That’s when I found out. Jamie learned that they have this policy regarding the COVID vaccine for both donor and recipient.”

Lutali met Fougner 10 months ago during a Bible study. Lutali said she had not received the vaccine because there were still too many unknowns, while Fougner had not been vaccinated for religious reasons.
“It’s your choice on the treatment you have. In Leilani’s case, the choice has been taken away from him. His life is now being held hostage because of this mandate,” Fougner added.
UCHealth has stated that it has implemented the vaccination policy for the safety and health of its patients.

“For transplant patients who contract COVID-19, the death rate ranges from around 20% to over 30%. This shows the extreme risk COVID-19 poses to transplant recipients after their surgery, ”the health system told CBS4. The health system also noted that patients should receive other vaccines, such as against hepatitis B, to ensure that a transplant will not be rejected.
