UConn Health has canceled all appointments for the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine that were scheduled for this coming week due to a vaccine shortage.
Officials said there were vaccine shortages at the federal and state levels and their current weekly vaccine allocation was being reduced.
All scheduled first dose appointments at UConn Health from Monday February 1 to Monday February 8 have been canceled.
The coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be safe, but some of the temporary side effects can seem pretty harsh – especially when you get that second dose. Iahn Gonsenhauser, head of patient safety at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University, described his own experience of fever and “extreme” chills after his second injection so you’ll know what to expect.
According to UConn Health, decisions will be made next week on whether any additional appointments beyond February 8 will need to be canceled.
UConn Health will not accept any new first dose appointments over the phone or online.
Officials said anyone with a second appointment during this time should proceed as scheduled unless contacted by COVID-19 vaccination program staff.
Those currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine include:
- Phase 1a: People working in health care settings who are at risk of direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious material.
- Phase 1b: people aged 75 or over.
