‘UFO’ spotted by thousands of Scots turns out to be NASA rocket launch

THOUSANDS of Scots thought they spotted a “UFO” in the sky last night – but it turned out to be a NASA rocket launch.

Social media was inundated last night with photos and reports of a strange white light crossing the sky.

Eagle Eyed Scots shared photos from across the country, from Aberdeen, Buckie and Peterhead, to Perthshire and Bishopbriggs.

The images appeared to show an unusual bright white cylinder-shaped object shooting into the sky.

Theories ranged from a possible alien invasion to a police helicopter search, while others were more concerned with how they got fuel for the trip.

One viewer said, “The aliens are coming,” while another commented, “I thought it was a helicopter looking for water but couldn’t hear any sound.”

While one person joked, “How did they manage to get gas?”

The strange light turned out to be the launch of the Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Space Force base near California.

The mission of the NASA-backed rocket is to put the Landsat-9 spacecraft into orbit, alongside much smaller spacecraft to collect data from space on Earth’s landscapes.

The United Launch Alliance said: “A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket carrying the Landsat 9 mission for NASA took off on September 27 at 11:12 am PDT from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg space base. .

“To date, ULA has been launched 145 times with 100% mission success.

“With Landsat 9, the mission will continue to collect essential scientific-grade data on the Earth’s forests, farms, cities and freshwater regions.

“Landsat 9 will join Landsat 8 in orbit, and the two satellites will collectively collect images of the landscapes and coastal regions of our planet every eight days.”

The bizarre sighting comes three months after the Pentagon shared an explosive report that did not rule out the existence of aliens.

The long-awaited report, released in June, details what the government knows about a series of mysterious flying objects that have been observed in military airspace over the past decades.
