Houston's senior quarterback, D'Eriq King, will not play the rest of the season so he can dress in a red shirt, school announced Monday.
Keith Corbin, the second receiver of the team and also a senior, will also spend the rest of the season and a redshirt, the team announced.
King, who set the record of the American Athletics Conference with 50 touchdowns for last season, said in a statement that he was planning to return to Houston next season.
"I came here to play football at the University of Houston and that will not change," King said in a statement released by the school. King's father, Eric King, told ESPN on Monday that he thought it was the best situation for his son's future, both for his development as a player in that concerning his professional future and to avoid a "lost year". The Cougars are well off (1-3) with losses against Oklahoma, Washington and Tulane. King has started them all; Corbin started three of the four. If they do not play another game, both players can return for another season under the new redshirt rule introduced in 2018, which allows players to play up to four games while retaining a year of eligibility.
