People with ‘significant’ allergic reactions are being warned not to receive Pfizer’s new coronavirus vaccine – after two people needed treatment after being bitten the day it was launched in the UK.

The unidentified duo – both staff from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) – needed treatment for an ‘anaphylactoid reaction’ on Tuesday as they were among the first in the world to be vaccinated, said The Telegraph.

The Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) immediately issued precautionary advice against vaccinating anyone with a history of “significant” allergic reactions to drugs, foods or vaccines, the newspaper said.

“Two people with a history of significant allergic reactions reacted negatively yesterday,” said Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director for the NHS in England, saying “both are recovering well.”

“The MHRA advised as a precaution that people with a significant history of allergic reactions should not receive this vaccination,” he said, insisting that the advice was “common with new vaccines”.

The head of the regulatory agency, Dr June Raine, noted the adverse reactions to the vaccine in a report to a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.

“We know from very extensive clinical trials that this was not a feature,” she said.

“But if we are to strengthen our advice, now that we have had this experience with vulnerable populations, the groups that have been selected as a priority, we immediately get that advice on the ground.”
